Road Thoughts
It’s day 10 of our trip and I am feeling guilty. I meant to have been writing all along, sharing picture, being witty and entertaining. But by the end of the busy touristy day, I’ve been tired, and I keep saying “I’ll write tomorrow.” What kind of writer am I, anyhow? We’ve been at the Lake Qunnault lodge since Saturday night, and we leave here on Friday.
I am having a marvelous time, and we’ve gotten some real rest, and no feeling like we’ve wasted days. Today we didn’t even leave the Lodge.
I did write some poems. Here they are.
Lolo Pass
The river winds
next to the road—
the road echoes the
river’s curves.
Tall pines stand
row apon row
flashing by
all stillness
all motion
zipping by
all ablur.
The river chuckles
and dances,
the sunlight
striking sparks
from rivulets
and rapids
playful
wild river.
Polouse
Rolling and undulating
like a ripe woman’s curves
spotted with cows
“Cattle” he says
on and on
the hills roll out
like a magic carpet
billowing through the air.
The vast blue morning glory sky
is pasture for
woolen cumulus.
Dancing
Into the woods
to the silent lake
on the night of the round full moon.
We are decked in finery
and cloaks against the chill.
The boats approach
polled quietly across the lake;
we cross and pass
to the Other Place
and soon reach the dancing-grounds
where faeries
all sorts
Lords and Ladies
and Dark Ones
the Seelie and
Unseelie
take our hands and we
whirl beneath the
round pearl moon.
Not bad, I do enjoy writing poetry. I need to Just Do It as Nike recommends. When we get to the next hotel, one with free and faster WiFi, I will post lots of pictures and videos. I just tried, but it won’t upload.
I think my favorite part of the trip so far was the ride through Lolo pass. Twisting, winding road with the deep woods to the left and a beautiful wind river to the right. I think the driving was a bit challenging for Nathan, but the scenery is so magical that it was totally worth it. It winds through the top of Idaho.
More later, My lovelies. I PROMISE. Myself and to you.
